Urban Tumbleweed is a durational, site-specific performance that brings together the beauty and agency of recycled soft plastics, ancient materials, and the natural world. Using discarded plastic—sourced from homes, workplaces, and everyday life—the artist creates a fabric that forms the foundation of the Urban Tumbleweed costume, known as "Hand-me-down." The performer, wearing the costume, becomes a living embodiment of movement, as they improvise a unique dance driven by the dynamics of the space, the materials, and their connection with the audience.
This powerful piece explores the unexpected beauty of soft plastics as they rustle, undulate, and reflect light in slow, mesmerizing rhythms. As the performer moves through the site, whether it's a hallway, garden, or street, their journey mimics the natural forces that shape our world—the wind, ocean currents, and even stillness. Urban Tumbleweed invites audiences to witness the ancient energy of the plastic materials as they move towards their ultimate destination, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch—the new "Land of the Dinosaur."
The piece is performed with a guide, ensuring safety while communicating with the performer through voice and body. This performance is available as a solo or in groups of up to three tumbleweeds, creating an immersive, dynamic, and thought-provoking experience.
Urban Tumbleweed is ideally suited for long durations, offering an evolving experience as it moves throughout the space. It’s a reminder of how discarded materials can reclaim agency, finding beauty in the cycle of consumption and transformation.
