REMAINING JUICE

Container Series

REMAINING_JUICE_IMAGE.jpg

'REMAINING JUICE' distills Wellington’s history into a potent, confrontational scent, capturing the city’s industrialisation, oceanic chaos, and relentless winds—traces of a place shaped by exploitation and transformation.

Wellington’s history is marked by colonisation, with land confiscation and displacement of Māori under the guise of settlement. Reclaimed land reshaped the harbour, erasing natural landscapes. Industrialization fueled growth but at a cost: environmental degradation, cultural erasure, and the creation of a city built on uneasy foundations.

The artwork features a concrete bath filled with volcanic rocks infused with the aroma, acting as diffusers that release the heady, heavy smell. This visceral olfactory experience critiques the hidden costs of Wellington’s transformation—a sensory protest against the layered tensions and histories embedded in the city’s foundations.

This work was commissioned by Curator, Lîm Fawine Kado, for the special 15th Anniversary program of The Performance Arcade, prior to 07 February 2025
